Beijing 2008 Olympic LogoRemember that UPS superbowl commercial a few years back where a company launched their Web site only to be overloaded with sales in the first few minutes?  Most would consider that a good problem, and a reason to invest more in the system.  China is not most people apparently.

Chinese Olympic officials started a site on October 30th to sell tickets for the games in Beijing next year and were flooded with requests.  The site received over 200,000 ticket requests per minute in the first hour.  As Borat would say, “Great Success!”  Unfortunately the system was only setup to handle 150,000 requests per minute, and subsequently crashed. 

So the lesson here is, if demand for your product is so high to overload the system you surely spent months creating, abandon it for a more low tech lottery system immediately.  Way to go for the Gold, China!
